Interventions

Group 1: At each site (Bonn, Tirol), a group of 50 patients with depression as well as a group of 50 healthy controls will be studied. There is no treatment or other intervention as part of this study

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients: • Diagnosis of depression (DSM-5 categories 296.21, 296.22, 296.23, 296.31, 296.32, 296.33) • 18-45 years old, • right-handed, • normal or with contact lenses corrected eyesight Controls: • healthy, • 18-45 years old, • right-handed, • normal or with contact lenses corrected eyesight

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients: • Aged below 18 or above 45 years, • Current physical disease, • Current neurological disease especially ataxias, • Past diagnosis of neurological disorders, • Eye injuries or diseases, • Wearing glasses, • Current participation in a medicines trial, • Claustrophobia, or having had a panic attack in an enclosed space in the past, • Metal parts in the body or hair (earrings, piercings), • large tattoos in upper part of the body, • metallic implants, protheses, pacemakers or medication pumps (e.g. insulin pumps), • for women: IUD, • having done welding work in the past, • wearing glasses (contact lenses are no problem), • current or past hearing deficits, • having ever had operations on the heart, eyes or head Controls: • Aged below 18 or above 45 years, • Current physical disease, • Current psychiatric disease • Current neurological disease especially ataxias, • Past diagnosis of neurological or psychiatric disorders, • Eye injuries or diseases, • Wearing glasses, • Current participation in a medicines trial, • Claustrophobia, or having had a panic attack in an enclosed space in the past, • Metal parts in the body or hair (earrings, piercings), • large tattoos in upper part of the body, • metallic implants, protheses, pacemakers or medication pumps (e.g. insulin pumps), • for women: IUD, • having done welding work in the past, • wearing glasses (contact lenses are no problem), • current or past hearing deficits, • having ever had operations on the heart, eyes or head
