40 Years to 80 Years

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Ages between 40 and 80 years old - Suffering from a severe major depression (Symptom criteria based on ICD-10) - Resistence to at least two antidepressive medications, operationalized though the ATHF (antidepressant treatment history form) - MADRS-score of 30 or above - ability to give informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - contraindication for the necessary anaestheasia - psychoorganic disorders such as epilepsy, Morbus Parkinson, dementia, stroke or traumatic brain injury - addiction disorders - prior treatment with ECT in the index episode - patients unable to provide informed consent (patients under guardianship)
