Interventions

Group 1: -Survey of staff in three intensive care units (anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine
neonatology
neurology) of the University Hospital Freiburg with all staff working in the intensive care unit who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria on their noise exposure. -Interviews with intensive care

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Employees: - = 18 years - Staff in the participating intensive care units. These include: o Nursing staff (nurses with at least three years of vocational training, nursing assistants, nursing assistants) and "nursing support professions" (service assistants, hotel specialists, care assistants, secretaries) o Physicians, o Physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists. 2. Intensive care patients: - = 18 years old, - awake, - fully oriented to all dimensions, - in intensive care for at least 48 hours, - able to communicate - speaks and understands German, - able to give consent. 3. Parents of neonatal intensive care patients: - = 18 years old, - awake, - fully oriented to all dimensions, - able to communicate, - speaks and understands German, - Newborn has been in the ICU for at least 48 h, - present in the ICU for at least three hours in the last 48 hours.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Employees: - < 18 years - trainees in nursing or therapeutic professions or students of human medicine, - staff from the "pool of temporary staff". 2. Intensive care patients: - < 18 years old, - restrictions of vigilance: somnolent, soporific, comatose, - unable to communicate verbally, in writing or with a language able to communicate, - diagnosed hearing loss or deafness (ICD-10-GM-2021: H83-, H90.-, H91.-). 3. Parents of neonatal intensive care patients: - < 18 years old, - current stress situation according to the assessment of the caring nurses or physician, - not present in the ICU for at least three hours in the last 48 hours.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Primary endpoint: - The primary endpoint is the noise or sound levels in each ICU measured as the mean sound level LAeq,1min aggregated per hour by calculating the energetic mean at the end of intervention phase PS1.3 compared to the beginning of pre-phase PS0.1.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary endpoints: - The noise or sound levels in the individual intensive care units recorded in defined time periods throughout the project duration with the following measured values: o average sound level LAeq,1min, o maximum values LAFmax, o maximum peak values LCpeakmax. The measurements are aggregated per hour and per time of day (daytime and nighttime). For the mean sound levels LAeq,1Min, the aggregation is done by calculating the energetic mean values over the hour or time of day, for the maximum values LAFmax and the maximum peak values LCpeakmax, the aggregation is done by determining the maxima over the hour or time of day. - Noise exposure of staff in intensive care units. Noise exposure is recorded for three survey periods in the form of an online survey. - The assessment of the noise exposure of intensive care patients in the respective intensive care units and of the parents of neonatal intensive care patients. Intensive care patients or parents are interviewed per survey period (3).
