Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Frequency and length of checking behaviour State measurements of emotion, cognition and disorder-specific pathology in all groups before, during and after body checking as well as 10 and 20 minutes afterwards. In addition, independent of Body Checking (in the context of time-contingent measurements at five time points): Self-Assessment Manikin for Arousal and Valence (SAM; Bradley & Lang, 1994), five segregated items from the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS-X; Röcke & Grühn, 2003), scale to assess the extent of worry in relation to the main apprehension (Worry Scale), and one disorder-specific item each from the Body Image State Scale (BISS, Cash et al., 2002), the Body Dysmorphic Symptoms Questionnaire (FKS; Buhlmann et al., 2009) and the modified version of the Short Health Anxiety Inventory (mSHAI; Bailer et al., 2013) (whereby the time criterion was adjusted in each case). Questionnaire on the extent of goal achievement in body checking (Hartmann et al., 2019); asked retrospectively at the time before the checking episode.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Baseline measures (collected as part of the overall project): ICD-10 Symptom Rating (ISR, Tritt et al., 2008), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES; von Collani & Herzberg, 2003), Negative Emotionality subscale of the Big Five Inventory (BFI-2; Danner et al., 2019) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9; Löwe et al., 2002), Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q; Hilbert & Tuschen-Caffier, 2006), Body Dysmorphic Symptoms Questionnaire (FKS; Buhlmann et al., 2009), Whiteley Index (WI; Glöckner-Rist, Barenbrügge, & Rist, 2014),Catastrophizing Rating subscale of the Body and Health Questionnaire (FKG; Hiller et al., 1997), Uncertainty Intolerance Questionnaire (UI-18; Gerlach, Andor & Patzelt, 2008), Body Checking Questionnaire (BCQ; Vocks, Moswald & Legenbauer, 2008), Urgency subscale of the UPPS Impulsive Behaviour Scale (Schmidt et al., 2008), Extent of Goal Attainment Questionnaire (Hartmann et al., 2019). Telephone screening: Diagnostic Brief Interview for Mental Disorders (Mini-DIPS, Margraf & Cwik, 2017) Laboratory diagnostics: Categorical recording of the main diagnosis and comorbid symptomatology or absence of a diagnosis (for the control group) by Diagnostic Interview in Mental Disorders (DIPS, Margraf et al., 2021); brief interview on checking behaviours
