Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. intensive care patient (fasted for at least 8 hours) 2. 18 years or older 3. (planned) constant enteral feeding (group A) or (planned) constant parenteral feeding (group B) 4. planned, oral stress ulcer prophylaxis with the proton pump inhibitor esomeprazole (according to SOPs)

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Acute gastrointestinal bleeding with additional spontaneous drop in mean arterial blood pressure of at least 20 mmHg or start of vasopressor therapy or 20% increase of vasopressors given or decrease of hemoglobin serum concentration of at least 3 g/dl without other causes or administration of 2 or more erythrocyte concentrates. 2. Patients suffering Gastroenteritis or Ileus-symptomatology at the time of study enrolment. 3. Pregnant or breast feeding women 4. Significant gastric emptying retardation with reflux via a persisting stomach tube of more than 750 ml/24h at the time of study enrolment.
