Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: For nursing home staff: (1) willingness to participate on a three-day training with the InCoPE-App; (2) command of German language as the InCoPE-App is only available in Germa; (3) employment at the care facilities for at least more than 18 weeks. For the participants of the individualized physical exercise program: (1) primary degenerative or vascular dementia; (2) mild to moderate dementia (MMSE: 10-24); (3) age above 65 years; (4) ability to walk (10m); (5) written consent; (6) clearance from a general practicioner.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: For nursing home staff: External employees (e.g. physical therapists) will be excluded. Exclusion For the participants of the individualized physical exercise program: secondary dementia, other severe underlying diseases (e.g. other neurological/psychiatric disease, severe motor impairment, severe disease in acute stage).

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
The primary outcomes of the study are the usability and feasibility of the InCoPE-App. The usability will be assessed in two phases. The first phase will take place during training of the nursing home staff. Participants will be asked to perform representative tasks in combination with the think-aloud method. Here, objective data such as processing time and accuracy, human errors, mental load, finding weak points are collected. Afterwards the participants fill out the System Usability Scale questionnaire. In addition, interviews about the satisfaction with the InCoPE-App will be carried out. The further evaluation of the InCoPE-App will take place after the 18-week field intervention in nursing homes. Nursing home staff will test and train at least two individuals with dementia using the InCoPE-App. At the end of the 18-weeks intervention, usability will be assessed using the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) as well as the ISONORM questionnaire (Prümper, ISONORM 9241/10). Beyond usability, the perceived hedonic and pragmatic quality of the InCoPE app is assessed via the AttrakDiff questionnaire (Hassenzahl et al., 2003). Again, short user interviews will be conducted, which address the satisfaction and feasibility of the physical exercise program. For feasibility, so-called "log events" from the app will be evaluated (e.g. assessment duration, training duration, number of completed training sessions).

The secondary outcomes are variables related to the effectiveness of the individualized exercise program (baseline (week 0) and post assessment (week 19)). Effectiveness will be measured with the following variables: Quality of Life: QoL-AD (Logsdon 1999) Global cognition: MMSE (Folstein et al. 1975) Executive function: Digit span (Wilde et al. 2004) Mobility: Timed Up & Go test (Podsiadlo und Richardson 1991) ; six meter Walking Test (Graham et al. 2008) Function and strength of lower limbs: Modified 30 second Chair-Stand Test (Jones et al. 1999) Balance: FICSIT-4 (Rossiter-Fornoff et al. 1995) Grip strength: balloon manometer (Sousa-Santos und Amaral 2017) Frailty: standardized phenotype of frailty in older adults (Fried et al. 2001) Pain: Single Items Sociodemographic data and medical information: Singe Items Body height, weight: Single Items Fear of Falling: FES-I (Dias et al. 2006)
