Interventions

Group 1: ICU patients with infections: Analysis of heparinized blood samples with digital holographic microscopy and magnetic flow cytometry on up to four days with intervals of at least two days. In
current medication (antibiotics, antiplatelet drugs...)
SOFA Score and peak body temperature on the day of cytometry and the day after
microbiological findings regarding the day of cytometry (blood cultures, …) Group 2: ICU patients without infections Analysis of heparinized blood samples with digital holographic microscopy and magn
routine blood sample parameters (white blood cell count, procalcitonin/lactate/creatinine) on the day of cytometric measurement and the day after
microbiological findings regarding the day of cytometry (blood cultures, …)

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients m/f = 18 years, assumed stay for = 48h in an ICU Patient having already a central venous line or an intraarterial catheter

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: pregnancy, refusal of consent of the patient or his/her person in charge lacking linguage skills in German or English of the Patient or his/her person in charge missing rountine blood test at the day of cytrometric analysis

MeasureTime frame
Does the diagnosis of an infection correlate with changes in cell morphology in digital holographic microscopy and magnetic flow cytometry ? Possible morphological changes are compared with data from patients records. With these data we decide whether an infection was present on the day of analysis with holographic microscopy and magnetic flow cytometry. In case of an infection we document the underlying agent (bacteria, virus, mykosis)

MeasureTime frame
Is the used cytometry able to detect infections earlier than established blood sample parameters (procalcitonin/white blood cell count). Are the proven changes in cellmorpholgy more specific for infections than these. Is cytometry potentially a diagnostic tool to distinguish between the underlying agent (bacteria, virus, fungus)? Are possible changes in cell morphology only traceable in systemic bloodstream infections or also in localized ones.
