Interventions

Group 1: In 25 patients with sepsis, 30 ml blood is collected daily for a total of 5 days (day of diagnosis of "sepsis" = day 1). Group 2: 20 healthy controls

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients: Consent by the legal representative, age = 18 years, diagnosis "sepsis" according to sepsis 3 definition (sepsis-associated organ dysfunction indicated by a change of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score by 2 or more points compared to the previous day) Healthy controls: consent, age = 18 years

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Pregnancy, inclusion in an interventional study, infectious viral diseases (HBV, HCV, HIV, COVID-19) or unknown COVID-19 status, iatrogenic immunosuppression, diagnosis of "sepsis" > 24h

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Using molecular biological and immunological methods, parameters of the iron metabolism on cellular and humoral level as well as the function of the immune cells are examined on each of the daily blood samples

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Inflammatory markers, occurrence of secondary infections, 30-day survival, length of stay in intensive care, basic demographic, therapeutic and clinical data
