Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Subjective desire to reduce their alcohol consumption - Sufficient command of the German language - Consent to participate in three anonymous 20-minute online surveys

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - No acute suicidal tendencies (BDI-II item suicidal tendencies = 2) - no schizophrenia or bipolar disorder

Visual analogue scale (VAS): a visual analogue scale from 0 (not at all/never) to 100 (very strong/ always) measuring alcohol craving over the last seven days using three items (strength of cravings during periods of non-drinking; strongest craving for alcohol; frequency of craving for alcohol). VAS is administered at baseline, post (6 weeks) and follow-up (12 weeks).	—

Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, AUDIT: 10-item screening instrument measuring alcohol related problems; a score of eight serves as a cutoff for probable alcohol use disorder (at baseline, post and follow-up assessment). Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ): The VVIQ assesses the imaginative ability using 16 items (at baseline assessment). Patient Health Questionnaire – depression module (PHQ-9): The PHQ-9 assesses depressive symptoms and is used for exclusion of patients with acute suicidal tendencies. WHO Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF): quality of life is assessed using the global item of the WHOQOL-BREF (“How would you rate your quality of life?”) University of Rhode Island Change Assessment Scale (URICA): a subset of items of the subscales of this self-report questionnaire is used to assesses the stage of change (at baseline assessment). Credibility/Expectancy Questionnaire (CEQ): One item of the CEQ is used to measure treatment expectations (at baseline assessment). Negative side effects: a self-developed questionnaire of 10 items will be administered assessing negative side effects of the intervention (e.g., “The imagination of my preferred alcoholic drinks burdened me.”). Patient satisfaction questionnaire in modified version (ZUF-8): Eight items assessing patient satisfaction with treatment (at post assessment). Subjecitve appraisal. Five items assessing subjective appraisal of the self-help technique and six items assessing subjective appraisal of the design of the video.	—
