Group 1: The SPD patients are randomly assigned to the ‘Soft Touch Training’ (STT
daily training à 15 min for 4 weeks). Before and after the 4-week STT/PMR, an fMRI experiment with slow and fast brushing of the skin will be conducted. Group 2: The SPD patients are randomly assigned

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: DSM-5 diagnosis of skin-picking disorder. Controls: No diagnosis of a mental disorder/ somatic illness

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients: Major depression (with severe symptoms), substance abuse/ dependence, psychosis and dermatological conditions (e.g., scabies, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis) Controls: No mental or somatic disorders/illness.

MeasureTime frame
It is predicted that the touch training will reduce symptom severity of SPD (self-report) and will lead to increased neural activity and connectivity (insula, somatosensory cortex, striatum, prefrontal regions, thalamus) during soft brushing (functional magnetic resonance imaging). Assessment: directly after termination of the 4-week training; comparison with pre-training assessment

Exploratory studies will be conducted to investigate whether tactile training leads to changes in the volume of grey matter in the regions of interest (magnetic resonance imaging; voxel-based morphometry).
