Interventions

Group 1: Intervention group: 3x/week 25 to 60min endurance exercise (extensive intervals: systematic switch between load and recovery periods) on the treadmill or flat terrain over a period of 6 month

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: • Between 18 and 35 years • Right-handedness • Oral and written informed consent • No prior history as a competitive athlete/sports performer • No regular physical exercise training in the 1-2 years preceding this study. • Healthy and able to undertake normal activities of daily living including independent use of public transport. • No (known) current psychiatric, neurologic or cardiovascular disease or history thereof.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: MRI related: Metal implants in the body; claustrophobia; carrying and non-removable jewellery; tattoos or cosmetics. Health related: • reduced general health condition • neurological or psychiatric disorders • acute cardiovascular complaints, myocardial infarct in past and existing coronary heart disease, acute heart failure, severe arrhythmia and valvular heart disease. • recent thrombosis or thrombotic disorders • hypertension crises, untreated high blood pressure =160 mmHg sys. and/or =100 mmHg diast, patients under antihypertensive therapy • Asthma and COPD • history of stroke • frequent dizziness • diabetes mellitus • known orthopaedic diseases that preclude from exercise intervention, such as unhealed fractures, atthritis, recent surgery and fresh wounds, account joint disease and osteoarthritis of the lower limb and spine • acute infection or inflammation • alcohol and drug dependence, use of psychotropic drugs • no consent to the release of incidental findings, related information is given in the MR specific information sheet Any of the above acute health related conditions, e.g. acute infection during the course of the intervention may cause a temporary halt of the exercise intervention and cause a prolongation of the intervention duration.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Based on previous results from Schmitt et al. (2019, 2020) we will expect significantly increased modality comprehensive structural and functional plasticity (domains: pain networks, affective networks, cognitive networks, in the fMRI data) that will increase gradually during the course of the intervention.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
According to previous work from Erikson et al. (1974, 2009, 2010, 2011) we will expect an exercise intervention related improvement in neuropsychological and psychophysical tests (Simple Reaction Time (RT); Choice RT, Trail Making Test A & B, Visual Search Task, Stroop Colour Word Task, Flanker Task, Task Switching, Visual Association Task, Spatial Object Memory Maze, Spatial Navigation Task). These results are helpful to characterise superiorly the examined neuronal networks.
