Interventions

Group 1: The interventions group receives feedback from the current connectivity between ACC and vStr. Group 2: The control group receives feedback from another person (yoked sham feedback).

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Age: 18 - 55 years, - good knowledge of German - affected by a psychiatric illness requiring psychiatric treatment (a primary diagnosis of an obsessive-compulsive disorder is not required) - currently under treatment for obsessive thoughts and/or actions - Y-BOCS Score = 16 - Stable treatment regime at least four weeks before the start of the neurofeedback experiment

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Pregnancy or lactation, - Contraindications - also relative- to MR examinations such as magnetic metal implants, large tattoos or claustrophobia, - non-existent or limited ability of the participant to give consent, - Drug addiction, - acute conditions requiring inpatient treatment.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Clinical improvement of symptoms measured by YBOCS (Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Change in connectivity between ACC and vStr in neurofeedback training (changes from baseline connectivity). Alteration of brain activation in the resting state (Resting state fMRI as a measure before and after neurofeedback) Change in pathology (quality of life) WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire as a measure of quality of life before and after NF training and after 4 weeks (follow-up). Change in pathology (depression) BDI-II as measure of intensity and quality of depressive symptoms before NF training and after 4 weeks (follow-up)
