Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Young healthy adults: - = 30 yrs of age and = 18 yrs - Normal lower limb function Healthy older adults: - = 70 yrs of age - Being able to walk with or without a walking aid independently or under supervision Older adults with a fall history, not patient in the rehabilitation center: - = 70 yrs of age - Being able to walk with or without a walking aid independently or under supervision Older adults with a fall history and patient in the rehabilitation center: - = 70 yrs of age - Being able to walk without a walking aid in the geriatric ward - Week three of rehabilitation

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Body mass > 135 kg (technical limitation) - Height > 185 cm (technical limitation) - Joint replacement surgery in the past 6 months - Blindness - Inability, to provide informed consent -Severe pain when walking

Change in the difference of stride length of the non-dominant leg during the last step before and the first step after the medio-lateral perturbation

Secondary

Paper-based protocol / questionnaires: Participants’ characteristics (e.g. age, sex, year of birth, height and weight, first time faller/recurrent faller, time to first fall, home or nursing/care resident, level of care, health status, visual impairment, hearing aid, degree of care), sports history,physical activity, treadmill experience Use of medication, including dosage and duration of use Falls risk profile: Number of falls within the previous 12 months, date of fall, fall-related injury, ED attendance Functional performance: - MiniBESTest Fear of falling: - Falls Efficacy Scale Quality of Life: - EQ-5D - Single step threshold in the open or closed bipedal stance. Gait analysis during individual habitual walking speed (including inertial measurement units and depth cameras) Dynamic balance during habitual walking speed. perturbations will be applied in anterior, posterior and medio-lateral directions as determnined for the single step threshold. If the participant is able to walk faster than 1.1 m s-1, the test will be repeated at 1 m s-1.
