Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - elective major abdominal surgery with a duration of = 2h (including general, abdominal, gynecological, urological surgery) - planned postoperative monitoring in a monitoring ward - placement of arterial and central venous catheter - written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - age < 18 years - pregnancy - vasculitis - peripheral artery disease (Fontaine IIb or more severe) - no written informed consent

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Incidence of microcirculatory alterations postoperatively after major abdominal surgery.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary endpoints are the individual proportions of patients who developed abnormal capillary refill time, mottling score, lactate, and central venous oxygen saturation (each marker individually). Additional endpoints are the proportion of patients with microcirculatory impairment (any vs. none and each marker individually) at each measurement point.
