Group 1: 50 patients will be examined preoperative and postoperative depending on their health-status within one week during their intensive care unit stay and undergo a clinical neurological examinat

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Age = 18 years, written informed consent, sufficient knowledge of German, elective cardiac surgery with heart-lung machine

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Employees of the investigators or of the institution who are involved in the conduct of this or other clinical trials, participants who are unable to provide informed consent due to language, psychological or somatic reasons, participants with pre-existing, already diagnosed polyneuropathy, HbA1c> 8.5%

Assessment of the incidence and the time course of the early phase of the CIPNM, assessment of risk factors for the development of a CIPNM, determination of the correlation between neurophysiology and / or nerve morphology and clinical outcome, determination of the degree of neurophysiological and morphological changes, determination of neurophysiological profiles

Determination of cytokine profiles during intensive care therapy, evaluation of differences in preoperative baseline values, predictors (e.g. frailty) of patients who will develop a CIPNM in relation to neurophysiological changes
