This study recruits healthy participants.

Interventions

Group 1: Combined oral contraceptive pill (oestrogen: ethinylestradiol
gestagen: non-methylated testosterone derivate, e.g. dienogest), intake: 21 days + 7 days break)
Study protocol: maximal strength test, followed by a single exercise intervention with 4 sets at 10 repetitions back squat each
Collection of blood samples at 4 time points (fasted, before and after exercise, as well as 24 hours later)
Explosive strength test (fasted, before and after exercise, as well as 24 hours later)
Timing of testing: during the 7-day break Group 2: Natural cycle
Timing of testing: between day 1 and 7 of the menstrual cycle

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 2-3 sessions of strength training per week

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: amenorrhoea; pregnancy in the preceding 12 months; use of other hormone-containing medication (e.g. L-thyroxin, IUD, hormone patches); use of emergency contraceptives in the preceding 6 months; more than 2 sessions endurance training per week

MeasureTime frame
Changes in hormone concentrations of testosterone, estradiol and cortisol; Method: collection of blood samples at 4 time points (fasted, before and after exercise, as well as 24 hours later).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
1. Changes in serum concentrations of markers of the tryptophan metabolism (tryptophan and kynurenin), Method: collection of blood samples at 4 time points (fasted, before and after exercise, as well as 24 hours later); 2. Neuromuscular fatigue, Method: explosive strength test (fasted, before and after exercise, as well as 24 hours later); 3. Blood lactate levels, Method: collection of capillary blood at 3 time points (rested, before and after exercise)
