Conditions

Driving fear can be part of any anxiety disorder and do not necessarily have to be part of a specific phobia. Also driving fear in the context of for example a panic disorder, agoraphobia, PTSD, social phobia or generalized anxiety disorder can be included and treated in this treatment study. F40.2

Interventions

Group 1: Treatment Group: -13 individuals, who seek psychotherapeutic help due to clinically relevant driving fear -screening via phone, info-session, diagnosis via SKID, randomization -20 therapeutic
the use of the proposed module to treat driving fear is optional

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: -the main reason for wanting psychotherapy has to be the fear of driving (fear of driving can be part of any anxiety disorder and does not necessarily have to be a specific phobia) -the main concern needs to be the fear of driving a car/being the driver (e.g. not a passenger) -score of 6 on the "ISAP", a scale measuring the specific fear of driving according to DSM-V criteria -the individual needs to generally agree to an exposure-based therapy -dosis of two 100-minute sessions a week needs to be appropriate for the individual

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: -no ongoing psychotherapy -in the case of a previous psychotherapy, the fear of driving should not have been treated in the past two years -no ongoing psychosis -no suicidality -no changes in psychiatric medication during treatment -no benzodiazepines or Z-drugs

Outcomes: -Scores on Driving Cognitions Questionnaire Revised -Score on ISAP (Instrument for assessing the specific fear of driving, according to DSM-V) -patient's evaluation -therapist's evaluation

MeasureTime frame
-Measuring the outcome with the questionnaires DCQ-R (Driving Cognitions Questionnaire) and ISAP (Instrument for assessing the specific fear of driving, according to DSM-V) -measurement throughout the therapy, pre- and post measurement and catamnesis -using an evaluation form for the patient as well as for the therapist at the end of the treatment
