Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) or posterior subthalamic area (PSA) for treatment of essential tremor (ET) Patients undergoing DBS of the subthalamic nucleus (STN), internal globus pallidus (GPi) or VIM with medically refractory tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (PD) Selection by multidisciplinary teams consisting of neurologists, psychiatrists and functional neurosurgeons Patients must be able to give consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Cognitive impairment (judge by interdisciplinary team) Intracranial bleeding, confusion, severe CSF leak, infection or any other complication after first stage of surgery Patients with accompanying severe medical or psychiatric disorders will also be excluded

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Identify spectral changes in the LFP during and before the onset of tremor. Local field potentials will be recorded from externalized DBS leads between stage 1 and stage 2 surgery (either 1 or 2 days after lead implantation). We will use a TMSi Porti amplifier and custom-written software to record the time series signal. At a later stage, the time series signal will be pre-processed (filtered, detrended) and analysed (time-frequency decomposition) to examine changes in the time-frequency spectrogram related to tremor.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Study the temporal dynamics of spectral changes related to tremor.
