Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1) acquired brain lesion = three months post onset 2) sufficient language skills for participation in the intervention and outcome tests 3) consent to take part in the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1) history of severe psychiatric disorders 2) alcohol or drug abuse 3) severe cognitive deficits that limit the realisation of the study 4) pregnancy

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Primary Outcome is working memory functioning. Performance is analyzed with multiple standardized neuropsychological tests which are combined to a composite score. Outcome measures are: Digit and Span Board tasks (WMS-R), Digit-Symbol Coding and Letter-Number Sequencing (WIE). All outcomes are measured 3 times: at baseline before training, after 10 training sessions, after 20 training sessions. Examinations are individual and take place in quite separate rooms. The examiners are blind with respect to group allocation.

Secondary outcomes are cognitive functions that partially rely on working memory capacity (attention, executive functions, long-term memory) as well as transfer on everyday life. Performance of cognitive functioning is analyzed with multiple standardized neuropsychological tests (attention: TAP alertness, TAP devided attention; exekutive functions: Stroop-Test, long-term memory: CVLT), transfer on everyday life is measured by standardized questionnaires (FEDA, CFQ) and self-reports. In order to control for unintended effects, intelligence (WST, LPS-3), mood (BDI-II) and variables related to training (feedback, performance in the trained task, strategies) are measured as well. Tests of attention are measured 3 times: at baseline before training, after 10 training sessions, after 20 training sessions. Executive functions, long-term memory and everyday life performance is investigated before and after the training. Control variables are examined only once during the study. Examinations are individual and take place in quite separate rooms. The examiners are blind with respect to group allocation.
