Group 1: Biochemical characterization of erythrocytes produced by healthy male individuals during a 3-weeks stay at 3450m of altitude.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - sex: male (rationale: intensity and irregulary timed erythrocyte loss by menstruation might desturb measurements after Age-cohort labeling - age: 18-50 y - physically and mentally healthy - no known diseases that might endanger exposure to high altitude (e.g. acute inflammation) - BMI > 18 and 10 g/dl - voluntarily signed informed consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - known susceptibility to high altitude illness such as high altitude pulmonary edema and acute mountain sickness - known illness of the respiratory tract - systolic blood pressure =150 mmHg and diastolic pressure 30 g/Tag), drug addiction

Major goal of the study is the detection of neocytolysis by measuring 13-glycine incorporation into heme

MeasureTime frame
Measurement of various parameters to characterize effects of hypoxia on erythrocytes that might explain premature destruction upon return from high altitude
