Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: assignment by emergency medical service to the emergency department for internal medicine at the Universitätsklinikum Essen progressive, life-limiting illness or progressive malignancy in patient history answer to the surprise-question is NO --> patient is expected to die within the following 12 months written consent

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: age < 18 years acute or traumatic emergency situation without connection to a pre-existing life-limiting illness

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Palliative Care needs/ Evaluation of sensitivity and specificity as well as precision and negative predictive value in comarison to the palliative care consult as a gold-standard

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
The secondary outcome are data describing demographic characteristics of the population taking part in our study. At the moment there is no such data published in german literature. The last descripive data about patients with palliative care needs in emergency settings is dated 2007 and derives only from preclinical care.
