Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Preterm and term neonates treated at the University of Gießen requiring a non-emergency peripheral vein access

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Need for emergency peripheral vein access (septic shock, chest compression event) 2. Known or anticipated difficult vein conditions, where venipuncture should be performed by most trained physician available 3. hemodynamic instability (mean arterial blood pressure < gestational age) 4. no informed consent of legal guardian

Peripheral vein catheter puncture success rate (as pecrentage) within the first attempt

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- Puncture success rate within the second and third attempt of the resident - puncture success rate of neonatologist after 3 unsuccessful resident attempts - video documentation of first resident attempt and assessment of different neonatal pain scores during the procedure
