Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: • Registered for and competing in World Masters Athletics Championships in Malaga • Age: between 35 and 105 years • Ability to consent • Agreement and signed informed consent before the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: • Injuries or disorders that interfere with calf muscle contractions • Injuries or disorders that interfere with vertical jump testing • Injuries or disorders that interfere with oscillometric blood pressure measurements and echocardiography • Any condition classed as unsuitable by the executive medical director

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Change in medial gastrocnemius muscle fascicle pennation angle between 10% and 90% of maximum voluntary contraction assessed via B-mode ultrasound on the medial gastrocnemius muscle. The examination is performed once per study session.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- Modeling the relationship between pennation angle and plantar flexor contraction torque via B-mode ultrasound. - Assessment of perimysium content and age by B-mode ultrasound. - Assessment of epimysium thickness and Age by B-mode ultrasound - Assessment of vertical jump power and Age. Measuring the peak jumping power via vertical squat jump test and vertical hop jump test. - Assessment of central artery pressure and stiffness and Age by CardioCube and ultrasonography. - Assessment of cardiac dimensions (by echocardiography; i.e. left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, ventricular septal wall thickness, posterior wall thickness, and left ventricular mass). - Assessment of life satisfaction, positive affect, sleep quality and sexual satisfaction and Age by following questionaires: Sleep Related Impairment – Calibrated Items, Positive Affect – Short Form 15a, General Life Satisfaction – Short Form 5a. The questionnaires are filled out once. - Assessment of resting metabolic rate and Age by indirect calorimetry. - Assessment of body composition by bio-electrical impedance (BIA). All examinations are performed once per study participant
