Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients undergoing open thyroidectomy or open parathyroidectomy and are able to give their written consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: patients who are unable to give their consent and patients who do not approve

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Evaluation of the sensitivity of autofluorescence and indocyanine induced fluorescence in identifying parathyroid tissue. Intraoperatively, autofluorescence and indocyanine induced fluorescence are assessed and documented. A grading will not be carried out.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
As devascularized parathyroid tissue is unable to incoporate the fluorophore, existing fluorescence is an expression of intact vascularisation. The extent of fluorescence will be visually determined using a threefold grading (good fluorescence, reduced fluorescence, no fluorescence) and compared to the visual image of the parathyroid gland in normal white light. The images will be documented.
