Conditions

Smoking and second-hand smoke can harm the unborn during pregnancy. This study assesses the population level association between perinatal health outcomes, such as preterm birth and small for gestational age, and the intervention, i.e. the implementation of the smoke-free legislation. The population-level policy may have different effects on different socio-economic groups. We will therefore conduct stratified analyses on socio-economic status on the primary outcomes. O60.1 P05.1 Z37.1

Group 1: All singleton hospital births in Bavaria (that occurred between 2000 and 2016) are included to investigate an association between the intervention, smoke-free legislation implemented in 2008,

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: singleton births between 24 and 42 completed gestational weeks occuring between 2000-2016

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: multiple births, pregnancies with unknown gestational age, unknown birth weight

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Preterm birth (<37 weeks), measured as a monthly rate of all live births that occurred during a given month, small for gestational age (< the 10th percentile, adjusted for gestational age and sex), measured as a monthly rate of all births that occurred during a given month

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Low birth weight (500g), measured as a monthly rate of all births that occurred during a given month, very preterm birth (<32 gestational weeks), measured as a monthly rate of all live births that occurred during a given month
