Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: normal weight, 20-30 years

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: diabetes mellitus, overweight (BMI > 26 kg/m²), chronic or acute illness, alcohol or drug abuse, smoking, competitive physical exercise, exceptional physical or mental stress, current medication of any kind

measurement of cerebral high-energy phosphates (adenosine triphosphate (ATP), phosphocreatine (PCr), inorganic phosphate (Pi)) by 31P-magnetic resonance spectroskopy (3.0 Tesla MR scanner) on six time points of measurement (Baseline, 15 minutes after start of lactate or placebo infusion, 3 measurements during hypoglycemia (every 20 minutes), 1 measurement after hypoglycemia)

counterregulatory hormones (ACTH, cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine) by analyses of blood samples on 10 time points of measurement (Baseline, after 60 minutes, 15 minutes after start of lactate or placebo infusion, 6 blood samples during hypoglycemia (every 10 minutes), 1 blood sample after hypoglycemia)
