critically ill intensive care unit patients

Interventions

Group 1: 1,2 g protein/kg body weight/24h
Control group with standard protein intake
enteral and/or (supplementary) parenteral nutrition depending on tolerance
if length of stay at the ICU-Station is shorter than 28 days, Intervention Phase will be finished earlier
if ICU-stay is longer than 28 days, intervention will be finished after 28 days Group 2: 1,8 g protein/kg body weight/24h
Intervention group with higher protein intake
if ICU-stay is longer than 28 days, intervention will be finished after 28 days

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: mechanical ventilation; overcome ebb-phase

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: chronic terminal renal failure; pregnancy; Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS); Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation/heart and lung support (ECMO); known myopathy; traumatic brain injury, intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebral ischemia followed by muscular failures

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Cross-sectional area of Musculus rectus femores and Musculus iliopsoae (bilateral) as a Surrogate parameter for individual muscle mass using ultrasound at the end of the intervention phase/intensive medical stay. Muscle mass will be measurend at the beginning of the Intervention Phase and after 28 days of Intervention (in the case of shorter ICU-stay measurement will be performed at the last day when finishing the intervention earlier).

MeasureTime frame
emerging pneumonia during ICU stay; emerging wound infections during ICU stay that cause chirurgical treatment ; nitrogen balance during intervention as difference between nitrogen intake and nitrogen loss in the urine
