Group 1: Samples of oral biofilm, saliva and faeces are being obtained from 60 healthy volunteers (20 subjects per research center), 60 patients with caries (20 subjects per research center), 60 patie

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - At each research center 20 healthy volunteers, 20 patients with caries and 20 patients with periodontitis are being included. - Other than that subjects are generally healthy. - No antibiotic treatment within the last six months. Definition healthy volunteers: Subjects exhibit periodontal sound conditions and 28 caries- and restoration-free teeth (DMFT = 0) Definition patients with active caries: Subjects exhibit at least two active dentine caries lesions and have undergone at least two invasive restorative dental treatments in the last two years. Definition patients with periodontitis: Subjects are being diagnosed with a generalized moderate localized severe chronic Periodontitis or generalized severe chronic Periodontitis (classification according to Armitage, 1999) No periodontal therapy and no supporting periodontal therapy (SPT) within the last 24 months.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Antibiotic treatment during the study - Pregnancy - Diabetes - Pathologies of the oral mucosa - Severe medical conditions (i.e. HIV, immunosuppression) - Pharmacological treatment affecting the gingival conditions (anticonvulsants, antihypertensive agents) - Limited inclusion of smokers (20% per group)
