Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Preference ratings of railway sounds are ascertained by a computerized questionnaire that is completed by at least 40 participants. The railway sounds are presented pairwise via headphones in a randomized order. The preference rating of the respective railway sounds is requested immediately after the acoustical presentation of the two sounds. For this purpose 13 different railway sounds with particular acoustical properties (e.g. different train types, different velocities, different proportions and positions of brake systems) were synthesized and 38 paired comparisons were generated. Data collection takes place in March 2018 in a sound isolated laboratory of the Institute of Aerospace Medicine of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne. Using the method of full paired comparison a preference ranking is provided. Our main objective is to compare freight trains with new and old brake Systems with regard to their pleasantness.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Furthermore, we compare different velocities, train types as well as proportions and positions of brake Systems with regard to their preference.
