Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Aged 18-75 years, diagnosis of alcohol use disorder, physically inactive (no planned exercise more than once per week during last month), living in Stockholm County, Swedish speaking.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Patients with known cardiovascular risks (e.g. a history of heart disease), those with musculoskeletal injuries preventing exercise, current regular exercise participation (defined here as 2 or more planned exercise sessions per week during the past month), and those with psychotic symptoms or with a primary somatic complaint, eating disorder or other substance use disorder. Patients who are at suicide risk (current suicidal ideation) will also be excluded and referred to a clinician for support.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Alcohol consumption assessed using the Timeline Follow-Back method (TLFB) and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Consumption will be measured at 12 weeks (post-treatment).

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Secondary outcomes will be measured at 12 weeks (post-treatment), and will include: Depression and Anxiety (Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale), physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire and objective assessment using accelerometers), Sleep Quality (Pittsberg Speel Quality Index), Cognitive functioning (CogState Brief Battery, Trailmaking A and B), Stress (Perceived Stress Scale and cortisol from blood).
