Interventions

Group 1: Patients scheduled for cardiac surgery will be screened for delirium and POCD and biomarkers (i.a. natriuretic peptides) will be determined in patients' blood samples.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: sceduled cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: combined surgery, emergency surgery, chronic renal disease (GFR < 60 ml/min), liver cirrhosis with hepatic encephalopathy, preexistent psychiatric disease (dementia, schizophrenia, depression), pulmonary arterial hypertension, severe cognitive decline (MMSE < 24), preoperative hemoglobin level < 10g/dl

Onset of delirium (Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition, Chart-Based-Method within the hospital), POCD (Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status preoperatively, at discharge and 6 months after discharge)
