Inclusion criteria: ICUs recruited for the study had a AHR consumption rate below german reference data of the national surveillance system KISS
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Intermediate care, non-intensiv care units

| •Hand hygiene compliance, measured by means of direct observation according to the WHO method (200 indications per observation period; a minimum of 30 observations per indication according to the WHO model „5 moments of hand hygiene“; observation of a minimum of 6 persons; observation within 5 consecutive working-days; use of a standardized observation protocol) at baseline (t0), towards the end of the intervention (t11) and a follow up one 1 year after the intervention (t23). •Alcohol-based hand rub (AHR) consumption, obtained by the hopsitals’ controlling and measured every quarter as AHR consumption in ml per patient day at baseline (Q1) and towards the end of the intervention (Q3). | — |
