Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria people without neurogenic dysphagia and people with neurogenic dysphagia: • Male and female persons aged 18 to 90 years old , • Written consent of the subjects after the enlightenment , • Non smoking persons

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria persons without neurogenic dysphagia and persons with neurogenic dysphagia: • inability of the people to follow the trial process, as because of language problems, mental illness , dementia etc. • Smoking people • Chronic respiratory diseases • individuals with tracheostomy • People with severe facial paralysis, • People with damage to the nervous core area in the brain stem ( - > no cough reflex ) • People in a persistent vegetative state • People with severe cardiovascular disease including uncontrolled hypertension

This master thesis project aims to measure the arbitrary and reflex coughing force in capsaicin inhalation in individuals without neurogenic dysphagia and individuals with neurogenic dysphagia. The inhalation of capsaicin is used to generate the reflex cough. The study will last from 1 July 2016 to 31.März 2017. During this time, the arbitrary and reflex coughing force of 30 people with neurogenic dysphagia and 30 persons without neurogenic dysphagia is measured. To measure a spirometer is used . Only the peak flow will be measured. Each person has to cough 3 times arbitrary and 3 times reflectively. The best value is taken. Measurements take about 20minutes. Thanks to the inhalation of capsaicin, individuals with neurogenic dysphagia, reflex enough strong to cough to clear the airways and prevent aspiration pneumonia .

Capsaicin is, after inhalation, able to trigger efficient, reflex cough . People with neurogenic dysphagia benefit from inhale capsaicin. In this way the reflex cough is enough strong to clear the airways and to prevent them of an aspiration pneumonia .
