Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Patients with idiopathic varus or valgus malalignment according to the mechanical axis angle of the lower limb (Moreland et al., 1997) and a clinical indication for a temporary correction surgery (guided growth with TBP).

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Signs of rheumatoid arthritis, anterior cruciate ligament deficiency, neuromuscular dysfunction, achondroplasia, dwarfism, flexion contractures in the knee or hip joint greater than 15 degrees, leg length discrepancy of more than 1 cm, avascular necrosis, history of major trauma or a sports injury of the lower extremity, knee surgery within the last 12 months, chronic joint infection, intraarticular corticosteroid injection, children younger than 6 years.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Standing leg axial alignment (varus/valgus) determined by instrumented gait analysis determines the clinical endpoint of the intervention. This is the rebound of the axis 6,12 and 18 months following explantation of tension band plates.

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
Mechanical knee load and muscular activity determined by instrumented gait analysis are secondary endpoints of the intervention 6,12 and 18 months following explantation of tension band plates.
