Group 1: Patients in inpatient qualified withdrawal teatment with Oxazepam p.o., 5-days-scheme (daily dose in brackets): 1. day: 20 – 20 – 20 – 20 + 2 x 20 mg as needed (= 80 + 40 mg) 2. day: 20 – 20

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - Alcohol dependence according to ICD-10 - Minimum age of 18 years - Expected inpatient treatment duration of 20 days - Written informed consent to take part in the study

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - Dependence on other substances than alcohol (except nicotine) - Withdrawal treatment according to 5- or 10-days scheme not possible due to mental or somatic comorbidities - Inability to take part in the study

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
Sum score of AWS scale for the first 5 days. The scale is used to assess vegetative and mental withdrawal symptoms which are rated 4 times a day by the clinic staff. Daily score: 0-116 points, 5-days-sum score: 0-580 points (theoretical limit)

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- Regular completion of treatment (as documented by the clinic staff) - Course of subjective well-being (well-being questionnaire by von Zerssen, assessed at day 2, 6, 11 and 18) - Course of state anxiety (STAI by Spielberger, assessed at day 2, 11 and 18) - Course of depressive symptoms (BDI by Beck, assessed at day 2, 11 and 18) - Craving for alcohol (VAS, assessed at day 2, 6, 11 and 18) - Satisfaction with treatment (PDQ by Marsden et al., assessed at day 2, 6, 11 and 18) - Course of confidence to stay abstinent (KAZ-35 by Körkel, assessed at day 2, 6, 11 and 18)
