In this clinical pilot study we evaluated the sport and exercise therapeutic outcome within an in-patient rehabilitation context using a prospective quasi-experimental design with two repeated measures. All newcomers to a local rehabilitation clinic were invited to participate in this study provided they matched the inculsion criteria. In our balanced experimental design all voluntary participants were either assigned to a control group or - consecutive to an essential reorganization in everyday clinical processes - to an intervention group. This sample had been prescribed to rehabilitate from their ischemic heart failure for three weeks, a common medical standard in the German health care system. The intervention group (IG) completed a unitized individualized physical training program, while the control group (CG) completed a rehabilitation program according to common procedures. Both sample groups were controlled for homogeneous socio-demographic and physiological parameters. We used a two way analysis of variance design with repeated measures to identify main and interaction effects for the following parameters (dependent variables): relative maximum oxygen uptake (VO2peak), heart rate reserve (HRR), maximum heart rate (HRmax), heart rest rate (HRrest), maximum performance (Wmax), 6-minutes walk test (6-MWT). Additionally, parameters of heart rate variability were analyzed. time domain: SDNN (ms2); RMSSD (ms2); pNN50% frequency domain: TP (ms2); VFL (%); LF (%); HF (%); LF/HF The two sample groups (CG, IG) and the two repeated measures times (t1 = pre test, t2 = post test) served as independent variables, respectively. The statistical significance level was set at p = .05. In addition to the level of significance, effect sizes were calculated and specified by the coefficient eta square.
