Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. metabolic syndrome with abdominal obesity (waist circumference > 102 cm) 2. meet two additional criteria for metabolic syndrome as defined by national Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatmen Panel III guideliens: - fasting TG conc. > 150 mg/dl - HDL-C 110 mg/dl - high blood pressure >140 mmHg systolic and /or > 90 mmHg diastolic or current treatment by anti-hypertensive medication

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Smoking 2. surgical procedure for weight loss within the previous 6 month 3. uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c > 10%) 4. severe renal dysfunction (creatinin concentration > 2.0 mg/dl) 5. active liver disease 6. obesity of known endocrine origin 7. significant haematology abnormalities 8. not able to walk at least 30 minutes per day
