Conditions

Basic research about cultural models of dying and how they are experienced or evaluated as positive or negative, or in between.

Interventions

Group 1: Participant observation and interviews with terminal care patients. The patients will be accompanied during their everyday activities, their experiences will be outlined and categorized.

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Persons require palliative care. 2. Persons are able to communicate in German or English. 3. Persons are in the physical and psychic condition to participate in the study. 4. Written permission. 5. Persons are eighteen years of age, or older.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Persons are not willing to participate. 2. Persons do not sign the agreement paper or cancel their agreement. 3. Persons do not feel at ease during the participant observation. 4. Persons suffer from dementia, or are otherwise not in full possession of their emotional and/or cognitive potential. 5. Persons are not able to evaluate what their agreement to the study actually means.

Ten to twenty participant observations are finished; the categories out of this research could be checked via interviews; an outline of general models of dying in Germany could be sketched.
