Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: maximal performance 5.0 Watt/kg (male) und 4.5 Watt/kg (female) during an incremental cycle test (increment 50 Watt/3min)

MeasureTime frame
Time to exhaustion, a measure of performance during prolonged, high-intensity exercise to exhaustion, was the main outcome measure in this study. Time was stopped and documented when subjects signalized maximum exhaustion or were unable to maintain a cadence of 50 rpm (revolutions per minute) for more than 10 s.

MeasureTime frame
Parameters related to mechanisms for potential improvements in performance (blood lactate, pH, bicarbonate concentration), as well as parameters of maximum performance (maximal workload, highest oxygen consumption) in a stepwise incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer (entrance test), were selected as secondary outcome measures. Blood lactate (enzymatic-amperometric method) and blood gas parameters (blood gas analyzer) were analyzed 2 hours before exercise, every 5 min during exercise and at exhaustion.
