Group 1: Treatment of postoperative pain by means of acupuncture: Pain =3 on the VAS will be treated primarily by means of acupuncture. If pain relief is insufficient, conventional analgesics (metamiz
500 to 1000 mg p.o. or i.v.) or intravenous piritramid (VAS 6 to 10
7,5 to 15 mg in 100 ml saline).

Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Planned elective surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy, open inguinal hernia repair with mesh implantation using Lichtenstein technique, or open inguinal hernia repair without mesh implantation using Shouldice technique); written informed consent
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Chronic consumption of analgesics; pregnancy; severe comorbidity (American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] grade 4 or 5)
