Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - patients with diagnosis of FM - aged between 35 and 65 yrs - body mass index (BMI) between 18 and 35 kg/m2.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: a) diabetes; b) rheumatic diseases; c) severe osteoarthritis; d) severe osteoporosis; e) severe musculoskeletal alterations; g) users of assistive devices to perform daily activities; h) orthopaedic surgery; i) patients who had attended physical therapy, rehabilitation treatments or had modified their usual FM pharmacological therapy in the previous 3 months of the enrollment.

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
a) Pain reduction as measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), before, immediately after the end of the programme and at a 6-month follow-up. b) Functional capacity improvement, measured using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and the 6 minute walk test (6MWT) before, immediately after the end of the programme and a t a 6-month follow-up.

effects of the exercise protocol on active spinal range of motion (ROM), in particular flexion-extension, right and left inclination, right and left rotation, as evaluated by means of a validated pocket compass needle goniometer, before, immediately after the end of the programme and at a 6-month follow-up.
