Interventions

Group 1: psychodynamic-interpersonal-oriented therapy (PIT) approach that includes tailored modules for anxiety, depression, and somatisation
16 sessions á 90 minutes with 1seesion per week Group 2: three, 30-min sessions of enhanced medical care (health oriented counselling) at 5-week intervals

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: clinically relevant impairment of health related quality of life: Vertigo Handicap Questionnaire sum score > 45

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - insufficient German language ability - relevant cognitive disorder (Mini Mental Status Test < 27) or other mental disorder causing major impairment of social functioning (including suicidality) - severe, chronic somatic disease - current psychotherapy - permanent residence more than 50 km away from the trial site

- severity of vertigo: Vertigo Symptom Scale (VSS) - depression: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) - anxiety: Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) - somatisation: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15) - Computerised Static Posturography (at 12 months follow-up in comparison to T0)
