Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Newborns were recruited prospectively if they met any of the following criteria: - cord blood pH <7.15 - base excess <-10 mmol/l - Apgar score at 5 minutes <6 - cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: maternal drug abuse, severe congenital malformation
