Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: - age >=18 years - ability to give informed consent - elective surgery with a risk of persistent postsurgical pain >= 10%

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: - lack of knowledge of the German language - inability of fill in the psychometric questionnaires without help - emergency surgery - postoperative intensive care

Design outcomes

Primary

MeasureTime frame
pain in the area of surgery after 6 months (telephone interview 6 months after surgery)

Secondary

MeasureTime frame
- average pain intensity at rest and during movement in the week before the telephone interview 6 months after surgery - average pain intensity at rest and during movement in the first 4 postoperative days (oral questioning at postoperative day 4) - cumulative morphine consumption in the first 4 postoperative days (readout of the PCA pump) - health-related quality of life (SF-36) 6 months postoperatively (SF-36 questionnaire) - average pain intensity in the preceding week 3 and 12 months postoperatively (telephone interview)
