Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: Inclusion criteria for the LDD group: (1) Aged 40–75 years; (2) A definitive diagnosis of symptomatic degenerative lumbar spine disease (e.g. single- or multi-segmental lumbar disc herniation, spinal stenosis) based on clinical symptoms, physical signs and imaging (MRI/CT); Pfirrmann disc degeneration grade III or higher, a VAS score greater than 4, an ODI score greater than 60, or the presence of marked lower back pain and functional impairment; (3) Priority will be given to patients with a balanced diet, regular exercise habits, regular bowel movements, good sleep quality, and who are either not taking any medication or are taking only those that have a significant impact on degenerative lumbar spine disease, gut microbiota and lifestyle habits; (4) Voluntary participation and signing of a written informed consent form. Inclusion criteria for the HC group: (1) Age, sex and BMI matched with the LDD group (matching criteria: ±5 years, BMI ±3 kg/m^2); (2) No history of chronic low back pain or sciatica; (3) Voluntary participation and signing of a written informed consent form.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: Exclusion criteria for the LDD group: (1) Use of antibiotics, probiotics or systemic immunosuppressants within the past three months; (2) Concurrent major gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer; (3) Severe systemic diseases (e.g. uncontrolled diabetes, active rheumatic or autoimmune diseases, malignant tumours, severe hepatic or renal insufficiency); Exclusion criteria for the HC group: (1) Same as the exclusion criteria for the LDD group (points 1, 2 and 3); (2) Imaging studies indicate clinically significant lumbar degeneration. (4) History of lumbar spine surgery, spinal trauma, infection or tumour; (5) Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
