Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Inclusion Criteria for the Depressed Group with Rumination 1. Aged 18 to 60 years, either gender, right-handed; 2. Meeting the diagnostic criteria for depressive disorder in the DSM-5; 3. Score of 18 or higher on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17); 4. First-episode or recurrent depressive patients, but without systematic use of antidepressants within one month prior to enrollment; 5. Responding "often" or "almost always" to at least two items on the semi-structured rumination interview, with a duration of more than two weeks; 6. Possessing basic comprehension ability to complete scale assessments; Inclusion Criteria for the Depressed Group without Rumination 1. Aged 18 to 60 years, either gender, right-handed; 2. Meeting the diagnostic criteria for depressive disorder in the DSM-5; 3. Score of 18 or higher on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17); 4. First-episode or recurrent depressive patients, but without systematic use of antidepressants within one month prior to enrollment; 5. Responding "occasionally" or "rarely" to at least two items on the semi-structured rumination interview, without obvious persistent negative repetitive thinking; 6. Possessing basic comprehension ability to complete scale assessments; Inclusion criteria for the healthy control group: Healthy individuals matched with the depression group for age, sex, and education level; right-handed; HAMD-17 score < 7; General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-20) score < 30; adequate comprehension ability to complete the scale assessments; voluntarily sign informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: Exclusion Criteria for the Depression Groups (Meeting any one of the following will result in exclusion) 1. Past history of neurological disorders, severe cardiovascular, respiratory, immune system diseases, or other major medical conditions; 2. Comorbid diagnosis of other psychiatric disorders; 3. Long-term use of benzodiazepines (lorazepam > 2 mg/day or equivalent doses of other benzodiazepines), or use of benzodiazepines within 24 hours before testing; long-term use of barbiturates or other drugs affecting the GABAergic system; 4. Inability to cooperate with electroencephalogram (EEG) data acquisition; 5. Patients who received repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) within 3 months prior to enrollment or currently undergoing such treatments; 6. Pregnant women. Exclusion criteria for the healthy group: also meet the exclusion criteria for the depression group.
