Experimental Group:Four weeks of individualized, multi-target tDCS combined with foot and ankle functional training intervention

Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. At least one severe lateral ankle sprain resulting in at least one day of inability to participate in sports, and the injury occurred at least one year prior to recruitment; 2. More than two instances of "giving way" in the affected ankle within the six months prior to enrollment; 3. Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) score 11 points; 4. Negative anterior drawer test and talus tilt test to confirm no significant laxity of the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments, thus ensuring that this group primarily consists of individuals with functional ankle instability (impaired neuromuscular control or central integration dysfunction). Furthermore, to ensure consistency and interpretability of results, we only included CAI participants with the right ankle as the primary affected side, i.e., a lower CAIT score and a higher IdFAI score on the right ankle were used as the criteria for inclusion.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. History of other lower limb injuries or neurological or psychiatric disorders within the past 12 months; 2. Use of related medications for neurological or psychiatric disorders within the past 12 months; 3. Contraindications to fMRI or tDCS, or prior non-invasive brain stimulation interventions.
