Inclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: 1. The results of the hepatitis B serological markers within three months prior to periodontal treatment were as follows: Non-HBV infection group met any of the following criteria: HBsAg, HBsAb, HBeAg, HBeAb, and HBcAb were all negative; HBsAg, HBeAg, HBeAb and HBcAb were negative, while HBsAb was positive. Chronic HBV infection group met any of the following criteria: HBsAg, HBeAb, and HBcAb were positive, while HBsAb and HBeAg were negative; HBsAg, HBeAg, and HBcAb were positive, while HBsAb and HBeAb were negative; HBsAg and HBcAb were positive, while HBsAb, HBeAg and HBeAb were negative. Occult HBV infection group met any of the following criteria: HBcAb was positive, while HBsAg, HBsAb, HBeAb and HBeAg were negative; HBeAb and HBcAb were positive, while HBsAg, HBsAb and HBeAg were negative; HBsAb and HBcAb were positive, while HBsAg, HBeAg and HBeAb were negative; HBsAb, HBeAb, and HBcAb were positive, while HBsAg and HBeAg were negative. 2. Met the diagnostic criteria for generalized stage III or stage IV periodontitis according to the 2018 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions: Clinical attachment loss (AL) at the most severe site >=5 mm, maximum probing depth (PD) >=6 mm, radiographic alveolar bone loss extending to the middle third of the root or beyond, and attachment loss involving >=30% of teeth. 3. Had not received any systematic periodontal treatment within the six months prior to presentation. 4. Completed initial periodontal therapy after presentation and attended at least one post-treatment follow-up visit. 5. Complete data were available in the medical records regarding periodontal examination, hematological examination, smoking history, alcohol consumption history, body mass index (BMI), and systemic diseases.
Exclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria: 1. Presence of liver diseases other than hepatitis B, hepatitis B virus-related cirrhosis, or hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma, such as: other types of hepatitis, cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma associated with other hepatitis viruses, fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, autoimmune liver disease, etc. 2. Presence of other infectious diseases other than hepatitis B virus infection, such as: hepatitis C, tuberculosis, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, syphilis, etc. 3. Presence of systemic diseases such as: diabetes mellitus, hematological disorders, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, malignancies, etc. 4. Use of antibiotics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs within three months prior to presentation. 5. Being pregnant or lactating at the time of presentation.
