Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age >=18 years, regardless of gender. 2. Surgical Type: Adult patients who underwent elective non-cardiac surgery at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, between June 2021 and June 2025. 3. Anesthesia Method: Etomidate or propofol was used alone as the intravenous anesthetic induction agent during general anesthesia induction (no combination). 4. Cortisol Measurement: At least one serum cortisol measurement was performed 48 hours postoperatively.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1.Cardiac surgery and surgeries requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. 2.Emergency surgery patients. 3.Patients allergic to etomidate or dexamethasone. 4.Data Deficiency: Data on key medication use in anesthesia records, intraoperative blood pressure records, and postoperative cortisol measurement results were missing, making it impossible to obtain main study indicators. 5.Others: Cases where major intraoperative accidents required suspension of surgery; surgeries were extremely short (8 hours).
