Inclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: 1. Age >= 45 years, with no gender restriction; 2. Inpatients admitted to the Department of Geriatric Psychiatry or the Department of Sleep Medicine, Peking University Sixth Hospital, between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2025; 3. Meeting the ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for major depressive episode, with specific codes including: (1) F32.2 Major depressive episode, single episode, without psychotic symptoms; (2) F32.3 Major depressive episode, single episode, with psychotic symptoms; (3) F33.2 Recurrent depressive disorder, current episode severe without psychotic symptoms; (4) F33.3 Recurrent depressive disorder, current episode severe with psychotic symptoms; 4. Having complete inpatient medical records that allow extraction of core variable information required for the study.

Exclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria: 1. Sleep disorders:Moderate-to-severe sleep apnea (AHI >= 15 times/min), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder; 2. Psychiatric disorders:Schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, dysthymia; 3. Neurological diseases:Dementia, Parkinson’s disease/syndrome, epilepsy, tardive dyskinesia; 4. Systemic diseases:Sjögren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, nephrotic syndrome, bronchial asthma, chronic atrophic gastritis, malignant neoplasms; 5. Endocrine diseases:Any clinical hypothyroidism (including primary and postsurgical) or hyperthyroidism; 6. Acute events:Infections within the past 1 month (fever, cold, pneumonia, etc.), acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events within the past 6 months (acute cerebral infarction, unstable angina pectoris, myocardial infarction), major surgery within the past 6 months; 7. Incomplete data:Patients with missing key variables (grouping variables or primary outcome measures) that cannot be supplemented from the original medical records.
